Harper gym bouncing as Ladyhorn volleyball fires up – Fredericksburg Standard

August 3, 2022
Large numbers and a core of experienced seniors had the Harper High School gym buzzing as the Ladyhorns volleyball team began its season on Monday.
The Ladyhorns return five seniors from the 2021 squad that went 23-6 and reached the Regional Semi-finals a season ago, and head coach Gina Lumpkins said the anticipation is high for 2022.
“I am very excited,” she said. “We’ve been working all summer and it’s nice to have the whole crew here. We are excited for the season.”
Following a 2021 season that came with a lot of success and a playoff run, the Ladyhorns went into the off-season hoping to build toward more.
“The summer was great,” Lumpkins said. “We had a good core group that showed up almost every day. They worked hard and encouraged each other and they’re going to be better and stronger for that.”
The Ladyhorns are welcoming a large freshman class and fielded over 30 Ladyhorns in the gym on Monday. Lumpkins said she is going to lean on her senior leaders to help transition the younger girls to the high school level.
“We have five returning starters and the leadership expectation is high,” she said. “I know with no doubt that they’ll step up to the challenge. There are some younger kids that are going to step up and join them and help them complete the team. I’m just excited to see how they’re all going to work together.”
The Ladyhorns will be on the road to face Junction in a scrimmage on Friday before travelling to Fredericksburg on Saturday to face the Heritage Lady Eagles in a scrimmage. Lumpkins said things are going to ramp up quickly for the Ladyhorns.
“We had a good team meeting; it was great,” she said. “Things are getting ready to get pretty intense very fast.”
The Ladyhorns’ season opener will be at home against the D’Hanis Cowgirls on Monday, Aug. 8.
