Y gym to be named in honor of tireless volunteer – The Ellsworth American

ELLSWORTH — The YMCA Board of Directors recently voted unanimously to officially name the Wiggins Center gymnasium in honor of Maralyn “Pete” Turnbull for her passion and dedication to the nonprofit’s mission. The formal presentation of this honor will be during the Y’s annual meeting on Aug. 4.
Since 1961, Turnbull “has been the leading advocate for the Y,” according to an announcement of the award.
“Her volunteerism and voice within the community has helped our organization get to where it is today. Pete’s impact on the YMCA is immeasurable and this recognition being planned at the Y annual meeting is truly fitting,” said Peter Farragher, CEO of the YMCA.
The Down East Family YMCA Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. under the tent in the Wiggins Center parking lot. The evening will begin with a social hour and appetizers catered by Chipper’s Restaurant. The recognition of the 2021 Teddy Saunders, Volunteer of the Year and Service to Youth award winners will begin at 6 p.m. The event will conclude with the recognition of the Turnbull Family Gymnasium.
Tickets are $10 per person and available by calling the YMCA at 667-3086 or online at defymca.org.
