In a July interview, Ackles revealed that he put on "maybe 15, 20 pounds of muscle" for his role as Soldier Boy in Season 3 of The Boys. According to Ackles, he originally thought his character's super suit would have built in muscles, though costume designer Laura Jean Shannon told him otherwise. He said that Shannon "just very pleasantly patted me on the shoulder, and she said, 'Oh, Jensen, you're going to bring me some muscles in April when you show up to set.' And I was like, 'Oh. Oh, okay. Yeah. Challenge accepted.'"
It was announced in August 2020 that Ackles would be joining the cast of Prime Video's The Boys as Soldier Boy, the first superhero manufactured by Vaught Industries in World War II, described by showrunner Eric Kripke as "Homelander before Homelander." In a previous interview, Ackles described Soldier Boy as both a "grandpa" and a "jackass." "He's a grandpa," Ackles said. "He's from the '40s. He fought in World War II, and he's just this curmudgeon, bigoted asshole. He doesn't age, so he's this 40-year-old superhero who's really 80 years old or 90 years old."

Amazon picked up The Boys for a fourth season in June just days after its Season 3 premiere. While little is known regarding the details of the upcoming season, it was recently confirmed that Cameron Crovetti, who plays Homelander's super-powered son, Ryan, had been promoted to a series regular for Season 4. It was also confirmed that the series had added two original supes to the new season as well: Valorie Curry as Firecracker and Susan Heyward as Sister Sage.
The Boys is based on the comic series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and the first two seasons of the show, created by Kripke, first aired on Prime Video. Season 3 of The Boys wrapped filming in September of 2021, and it was reported in August that had already been picked up for Season 4. The long-awaited third season began filming in late January 2021 in Toronto following production delays due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The first three seasons of The Boys are now available to stream on Prime Video.
