Lee County residents struggle to rent cars after Hurricane Ian – ABC7 News

LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Hundreds of cars were destroyed during Hurricane Ian.
Gisela Scherer lost everything.
She recalls her experience waiting out Hurricane Ian on a shelf at Luxury Rentals on San Carlos Blvd.
“When I was sitting up on that shelf, I didn’t know if we would ever get out,” said Scherer.
Not only did she lose her house, but she also lost her cars.
She filed a claim with insurance, but in the meantime, she knew she would need a rental.
She was able to get a rental at RSW, but rental companies there say there is a car shortage.
There is no promise that you can keep it if there are other reservations.
“We couldn’t even leave our San Carlos Island for like nine days because we had no vehicles and no way to get off,” said Scherer.
“I got to go back Saturday. So, I am just getting ready to go over to my sister’s just for a couple of days to breathe for a little bit,” said Scherer.
She said she just got her car claims in and is hoping to get a new car soon from the east coast of Florida.
